birthday scavenger hunt

Yesterday, the big kids and I hid all of Josie's presents around the backyard for a little scavenger hunt. Of course, May is the new February in Portland so it started raining just as we headed outside, but Josie did a great job of quickly gathering her loot.

She's been letting all of us know for months now that she wanted 3 things for her birthday: sunglasses, a sleeping bag, and a scooter. Done, done, and done.

And with that, we take a break from birthdays for a couple months. Phew!

our very own garden

If you live in Portland too long without a garden, people start to look at you funny. It's pretty much a given if you've got a plot of dirt somewhere at your disposal, that you grow all your own food, compost, and probably have chickens to boot. As of this afternoon, we are finally a third of the way there with our first ever vegetable garden.

I took the advice of multiple people and went with starters. Avery and I picked out cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, peas, strawberries and cucumbers. It'll be an interesting few weeks to see if we can keep these babies alive!

With plants in the beds, stepping stones placed around the beds and two basketball hoops installed, I do believe the backyard is done and ready for business:
