five!

Whew!  What a day for Miss Birthday Girl Josie.  She had school, ballet & tap, and then her first day of soccer.  Mix that all up with a few presents and an ice cream sundae and you get a jam-packed day.  She crashed hard at 7:30, but proclaimed that it was the best birthday ever (and the only one she can remember).

I think this 5 shirt & skirt set is my favorite yet.  The fabric is the same as what I used for Avery's bag and I'm so glad J picked it (okay, so I might have suggested it a little bit).  The skirt turned out super cute but it was frustrating as all get out to make.  I've made similar ones many times before but it's been a while and I got all sorts of measurements wrong.  Nothing makes me feel dumber than trying to follow a sewing pattern.  But, as long as I don't think about the disaster of a waistband, I'm quite pleased with the end result.

Andrew and I were both able to help in the classroom (our last co-op preschool shifts ever, woot) as a special birthday treat.  The weather was sublime so we spent lots of time outside blowing bubbles, kicking around a soccer ball and drawing with chalk.  The kiddos even got to eat lunch outside.  It was dreamy.

Almost immediately after picking Avery & Cayden up from school, it was time for Josie's first soccer practice.  She got the jersey, shorts and cleats for her birthday and was very excited to wear them.

And here she is after an hour of soccer in the 80-degree heat of the day:

All in all, it was a great, crazy day.  I don't think it's hit me that she's actually five already.  Happy Birthday sweet Josie!

the double layer skirt is super cute!

Where is Josie doing soccer? Is it a portland parks league thing like basketball?

Soccer is through our local rec club (the one that I did registration for the past couple years), a totally separate deal than the community centers. All the Portland rec clubs are K-8 but you can "play up" a year in the spring, so she's legit.

I had no idea that you had to wait until K, or spring-before-K. I have friends in Denver with their 2yo and 4yo in some soccer game stuff. I never gave it much thought (they are big soccer fans so it seemed natural).

I have no doubt there are clubs out there that take kids that young. But all the rec clubs in Portland are under the same umbrella group (PYSA) so they follow the same general rules. There's some sort of kindergarten program (no real teams/games--more like a camp), and then real teams and weekend games first grade and up. Can you tell I've given this spiel many, many times? :)

And now I've added a task to look into registering Avery for our local soccer rec club next Spring. Thank you!

Wow. Five is big. My girls were big at five. Josie can't be that big!
