aunts and uncles and cousins, oh my!

We hosted a long-overdue family gathering (hasn't quite been long enough to call it a reunion) today with Andrew's extended family on his dad's side.  There were many debates about who was whose second cousin or third cousin twice removed so I'm going to set it all straight here so I can link back to it when in doubt (Mara, this is totally for you):

L-R: Andrew's brother Joe, Aunt Patty, Ruby & Aunt Mary Jo

Andrew's mom, Colleen (aka Yaya), Aunt Patty & Ruby

Andrew's Uncle Mike (by marriage, as opposed to his Uncle Mike by blood)... and Ruby again

Zinnia!

This is where it gets tricky.  Tommy is Andrew's cousin, so according to the chart, that makes him Avery's first cousin once removed.  I think.

Colleen, Aunt Mary Jo and Uncle Tim

all orange, all the time for Miss Z

Ruby Frances, 6 weeks old

Not a great shot of the cousins: Josie, her second cousin (I think--he's her dad's cousin's son) Eli, and her first cousin (absolutely sure of that one) Zinnia

One more of Ruby because who can resist?

I always love seeing another Colleen! And Zinnia looks adorable in her birthday shirt.

As far as I can tell, your conclusions on relationship labels are correct. We are very close with my cousin and her family (who we will be vacationing with), which means I've had to figure a lot of this out. The easiest way I have been able to figure things out are:
- if you share the same grandparents, you are first cousins
- if you share the same great-grandparents, then you are second cousins.
- otherwise, you figure out who the cousins are and then the relationship is "X removed" where X is the number of generations apart.

This week we are going on vacation with my cousin, my half-cousin plus spouse, three first cousins once-removed, plus two more spouses. Elise and my other kids are officially "second cousins" with my three "first cousins once removed" but they are addressed as aunt and uncle due to the 20yr+ age difference.

In Vietnam, everyone is just "cousin" whether full, half, removed, second, whatever. simple. :)
